mixed emotions

  • Mood: Neglect
I was trapped at work for HOURS...and went down to the computer lab.

I was looking up Nights JOD music videos on you tube, and totally geeking at the creativity and boppy music people used. when a co-worker came up and commented.

"WOW! IS THAT YOUR ART? COOL TO HAVE A MUSIC VIDEO!"

I kinda felt a tug at my heart, and it made me both guilty for not drawing comics as often as I should, and sad that no-one EVER used any of my art in a vid.

"No." I said. " No one would EVER want to put my art in a video, i'm not good enough. I made a vid with some of my STARLIGHT EXPRESS art once, wanna see?"

and she looked...

and she was sadly unimpressed.

:(

she hummed and crossed her arms. "you know, that other video was better. maybe you should make some cuter art?"

.....I was kinda mixed for the rest of the night, heartbroken, and a bit feeling like maybe I'm delusional. maybe my art is utter crap, and I just can't see it. Then I was all like. :~DUDE!~: YOU'D BE PISSED IF SOME ONE "STOLE" your art.

...then I was like.... NO, I'd be flattered someone thought it was good enough for a vid.

....bleah...

I hate mixed emotions.

BAH! I SAY! BAH! Just becaues one person shrugs at your art, dosen't mean your art isn't any good! And, you don't need to make a music video or have someone use your art for one to make it good! The only possible way that your art can ever be bad, is if you believe it to bad. Take it from someone whose been there and is still doing that^^ you are an imaginitive and wonderful artisis.

I suggest you to make what you like, not what other people suggest you to do, even because your style(s) is more original of most of the stuff I see around. ;)

Ehh, that's not cool at all. I tend tofind that people are more likely to comment on artwork they understand - is your mentioned friend a Starlight Express fan? Maybe she just responded more to the comic stuff she actually recognised.

In any case there ought to be enough evidence here alone that people love your artwork, and one person's opinion shouldn't sway that. Like Lost_For_Words said, you should focus on what you want to draw, not what people tell you to.

I totally agree with Cez. I find that if people don't understand or aren't familiar with a style or genre, it will make them a little biased against the art itself. That doesn't in anyway negate the value or brilliance of the art itself though!

Let me tell you a little story...I've been trying to get my Cats paintings up in the shared uni house I'm in, but people kept taking them down at the beginning of term...one person inparticular who is very headstrong and totally used to get her own way in everything.

Her view was that "we love your art, but it's a little weird...and we don't think it really goes with the lounge!"

Humph. My inital reaction was defensive and I was very hurt because the lounge is predominantly filled to the brim with this girl's possessions and the walls are adorned with all her canvas prints and suchlike. THEN she had the audacity to say:

"Why don't you paint something nice foir the lounge we could put up? Like a landscape...or a picture of this house or something?"

No. Sorry lov, but I have my pride and I'm not just going to paint up a canvas that YOU deem good enough just so I can have the PRIVELEGE of putting it up on a wall, which I should have the bloody right to do anyway!

In the end I gave up though, and my mum took the paintings home as they were just cluttering up the lounge floor really. It's sad, but it made me realise that even if someone doesn't like your work, it doesn't make it crap. It makes their opinion vastly different from your own.

Now, this co-worker of yours doesn't sound like as much of a headstrong, bitchy personality as the one I mentioned, but the point still stands. Because of one comment, don't ever let it get you down about your own work.

More to the point, I know you know your work is beautiful and of value. Remember those times you sent me a sketch of a picture I'd done to help me with anatomy and such? I can't thank you enough for that! It was really sweet and of great encouragement to me that a great artist like yourself would want to help little ol' me out! ;)

So, I guess what I'm trying to say...verrry inarticulately, is you rock! Chin up, smile at the clouds and remember, we love you and your art, and nothing is going to change that. As Shakespeare said "To thine own self be true".

Art isnt about being the best at your trade, its a variety of different styles, without the different styles, it wouldnt be called art. So if someone didnt like your art, then they just arent open to the true meaning of the word.

Read through your old journals, hon, not that long ago you resolved to draw art purely for your own pleasure, not seeking approval or response from anyone else.

Stick to that! Draw what pleases you, and you alone! If you chase other people's approval, you'll only be let down because you can't please all people all the time. Whatever you do, someone out there won't like it! So do what YOU like. And that passion comes across to the viewers, who'll love it because you do. Or they won't, and you won't care.

..... *scratches head* I know you wouldn't seriously do this, so I must be confused, but I'll ask, anyway.

Did you just let someone assume you worked on JoD, or did this vid seriously have some of your art in it?

I'm just confused because the only thing you say you were looking for was JoD vids; ya never mentioned you found one with your art in it. ^^;

..... Or DID you work on JoD and never tell anybody? 0.o;;;
:iconladytwinkle:
no, no, no.... THey know it wasn't my art. I told them.

I have loads of art here. I work in an ART enviroment. people constently look through my sketch books.

She walked up behind me while AI was watching someone's fan video's with fan art in it, and asked if it was my art.

I of COURSE told her no, and then showed her a vid I MADE with my STEX art in it. She liked the other art in the other video better.

I NEVER WOULD EVER CLAIM ANOTHER PERSON'S ART AS MY OWN. EVER!!!!

(sorry for the mis understanding,)

Don't feel bad. Have you seen mine? At least you have storyline with your art. And if they didn't like your art, dosen't mean that its not good. It just means they don't see what you do when you draw. And trust me, anything you take time on or put your heart in will be wonderful.
....
Okay I'm done being sappy.
